Sexual harassment faced by flight attendants widespread across U.S.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued an advisory in 2010 banning all adult employees from touching or kissing female flight attendants. Although the regulations are not as severe as those for flight mechanics, it's still a warning to women — and men — who might feel uncomfortable being touched. The FAA said it's concerned about potential health risks associated with female employees and pilots. The agency has taken steps to ensure more women are represented at key executive positions, but a major priority for the agency is to provide additional female pilots in order to ensure the agency has qualified male pilots when needed.
The FAA said in 2010 that it would also begin to develop guidelines for female pilots, and is encouraging women — particularly from Asian communities — to submit pilot applications. The agency has also developed pilot training programs aimed at helping female pilots overcome technical challenges. A Department of Transportation report states that gender imbalance in flight attendants is already apparent in the U.S. and could increase.
The report noted that it's possible that more men and women work flight attendants, since more women are flying. It found that the percentage of men who fly compared to women varies by city, region and even by flight instructor.
On Tuesday, the FAA said it's considering requiring airline employees to hold at least a bachelor's degree in flight attendant education, a step that would provide more men and women with entry-level training to handle aircrafts. "There is an important message from this report that can guide other companies as they implement these safety recommendations," said Mary O'Hara, the acting administrator, in a statement.
She said women in certain fields are "not equally represented."
The report also found that female passengers can experience sexual harassment more than their male counterparts. Of all U.S. airport passengers, one out of four were harassed while flying in 2016, the worst year since records began in 1999.
The report said that as of 2012, there were nearly 400,000 reported instances of sexual harassment at airports worldwide, though it did not include those incidents at U.S. airports. It recommended that the aviation industry develop an enhanced harassment-reporting program to ensure more women are reporting their experiences, and to strengthen the nation's workforce participation efforts in combating sexual harassment.
The report also recommended that airlines promote a culture in which "people are accepted for who they are, not judged by the color of their skin," because such discrimination occurs with almost every aspect of American life. The report noted that the gender gap in employment opportunities in the aviation industry makes it much more likely that men are hired, despite having the same skills as women.

The federal Liberal government in Canberra has made big promises to restore superannuation to its original state and that means restoring the tax break – and all of the other benefits that have been cut from the government's original promises.
But these are not the "real" superannuation. The real super money is locked away elsewhere. It is not coming home.
I'm not a taxpayer, I have a pension and I take super. It takes a lot of sacrifice to get rid of the last of these benefits. For me, my $7,000 per annum superannuation account was a wonderful way to get the best deal for me. So for others, they are stuck with the same problem, in that they have to choose between the tax breaks they need, the payments they have made and the payments they don't, and the choice of taking a pay cut, waiting for the next tax cut, or even paying all of the other penalties that come with the old system.
Some may have argued this year that the government was simply trying to reduce the amount of money in the system because it was losing money. Unfortunately, this is not correct. The government is losing money.
I have seen a number of instances of senior officials being paid more than their superannuation contributions, and having to buy a house instead.
I don't blame the superannuation industry for being concerned about reducing their payments, but I will say that the government is not making it easy on them.
These super, and the other perks that the government is now cutting, are not supposed to be there. They are a burden. And while it may feel like we all knew that these changes would happen, they haven't yet.
