Analyst tips further drop in superannuation returns, survey shows

In an effort to promote a better outlook, the Treasurer and the federal treasurer are taking actions to boost the return on super funds.

According to a new national superannuation analyst, a drop in superfund rates could mean more money flowing into the super funds rather than being spent by state and territory governments.

"As of mid-2018, superannuation revenue in the states had been stagnant for five years," David Gower of the consultancy BDO Investment said.

"This means that state and territory governments would have been willing to pay more into the super fund system in return for a higher return."

In May, the Reserve Bank cut the annual rate on super funds on grounds it was the "biggest ever increase".

But, Ms Gower said with the cost of living rising and average super fund rates falling since then, this means there's not as much room for revenue and as a result the state and territory governments won't be spending as much of it as they used to.

"For many, that's quite a hit, but there's also a chance that the extra money going into the super fund system will be spent on things like improving the financial education of employees, building infrastructure or maintaining a good credit history, which, in turn, will pay for state and territory governments' other priorities," he said.

While many states and territories are already investing heavily in infrastructure, it will depend on the federal government's policies, he said.
